The 2027 Sovereign is here: the gold coin with more history than any other
The Royal Mint's 2027 Sovereign is now available: what's new, over 500 years of history and why it is a great way into physical gold.

Every autumn you ask us the same question: how can a coin dated next year already be on sale? It is standard practice at the major mints, which bring production forward to supply the market in good time. This year is no exception: The Royal Mint's 2027 Sovereign is already available.
No design changes, but a recent development worth remembering
The 2027 Sovereign keeps the look introduced last year. In 2026 yellow gold made a historic return to the Sovereign range, thanks to an adjustment in the ratio of silver to copper in its 916.7 alloy, leaving behind the rosy tone of recent decades. And it wasn't a one-off: in October 2024 the Royal Mint confirmed that all Sovereigns from 2026 onwards would be struck in yellow gold.
The obverse carries the official portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings; the reverse, the design that turned this coin into an icon: St George slaying the dragon.
Over 500 years of history in 8 grams of gold
The Sovereign was born in 1489, under Henry VII. That first Sovereign was a large coin, with roughly twice as much gold as today's. The modern version arrived in 1817, shortly after Britain's victory over Napoleon, with Benedetto Pistrucci's famous St George: an image of good triumphing over evil, very fitting for that moment in history. After its reintroduction as a struck gold coin in 1817, it returned as a bullion coin in 1957.
Under the gold standard it was the great international reference coin. Across the British Empire it was known as “the chief coin of the world”, and it was central to the classical gold standard in international finance and trade.
Why we like the Sovereign as an investment
In our view, the Sovereign is one of the best ways into physical gold:
- Manageable size. Each 22-carat Sovereign contains 7.322 grams of fine gold: less than an ounce, which makes it easy to buy and, above all, to sell in smaller amounts.
- Precision and security. Its weight is guaranteed to five decimal places, giving it the strictest specifications of any coin in the world, and the 2027 bullion version includes security features on both sides.
- Global liquidity. It is recognised in every market in the world, which makes it easy to resell.
- Durability. The 22-carat alloy makes it more resistant to knocks and scratches than pure gold coins.
The 2027 Sovereign family
As well as the full Sovereign and the half Sovereign, the range includes the quarter, double and five-pound Sovereign in various finishes. Interestingly, this year the Royal Mint adds a platinum Sovereign to the line-up, after launching the first silver Sovereigns in 2025.
